Traces of History in Omiš – Fortresses Fortica and Mirabela

Although the old town of Omiš is very small compared to some other urban centers in Dalmatia, there are many traces of history, such as fortresses Fortica and Mirabela. You should definitely visit these two if you find yourself in this town.

Fortress named Fortica is located at the top of Dinara Mountain. Due to looking towards Cetina canyon, Brač Channel and the islands of Brač, Hvar, Šolta and most of Poljica, it was often used by pirates for surveillance and defends. Nowadays, the Fortress can be reached on foot from Omiš, through the village Baučići, and it will take you a 20-minute walk to reach it. The road to the top is marked with signs, so there is no fear that you will get lost, and all the hard work will pay off when you see the beautiful view from the top of mountain Dinara.

This other Fortress in Omiš is known as Mirabela and it is located above the old town of Omiš at a 200 meters. It was built in the 13th century and served as a lookout for enemies, mostly Venetians. Today the fortress Mirabela offers you four floors with tourist vantage point from which you can see almost the entire old part of Omiš, Brač canal and the nearby place Duće. It can be best reached by foot from the street that runs next to the Church of Holy Spirit in the old town, and you will need a ten-minute walk. A ticket costs for adults is 10 kunas, while children pay 5 kunas to enter this fortress.
